Since the inception of Hairstory, we have woven the core concepts of sustainability throughout our business. We formulated New Wash to be biodegradable; we joined 1% for the Planet to donate a meaningful share of our sales to water-focused sustainability non-profits. And we offered free refillable metal containers to subscribers with pouches that use 69% less plastic, less energy, and less water to produce than bottles.
But we faced a dilemma: packaging waste. The only pouch construction approved by the FDA (at the time) for use with products like New Wash is not easily recyclable – a foil lining sandwiched between two thin layers of plastic is recycled only in special facilities. Nevertheless, we decided to adopt them for our refill program, and to stick with traditional, fully recyclable bottles for non-subscribers.
On our quest for true sustainability, we discovered a new foil-free and completely recyclable technology from Japan that has been approved for pouches for products like ours. With testing complete, we will be introducing this upgraded material later this year.
Meanwhile, we have phased out the hard plastic bottles and boxes entirely for New Wash in all sizes.
By the end of 2021, we hope to have refillable options for every product we sell and that you love.
We are on a determined journey to significantly improve the sustainability of our offering and reduce the impact our business has on the planet. Thank you for being a part of our story.
