Yes, New Wash is sulfate free, but also free of any detergent.
A detergent is what makes shampoo suds, foamy. So if you are using a shampoo and there are suds, there are detergents in the formula. Sulfates are chemically derived detergents, and the most common in shampoo. Even if a shampoo says it is SLS free, that simply means it does not have a chemically derived detergent. There are many natural ingredients that can be 'saponified' (a chemical process) and in this process sulfates are created and suds ensue.
